Terms of Use

1. Who can use the Site

You must be at least 16 years old to use the Site or create an account. If you're under 18, you may only use the Site with the involvement of a parent or guardian. By using the Site, you represent that you meet these requirements.

If you're using the Site on behalf of an organization, you represent that you have authority to bind that organization to these Terms.

2. Your account

To submit a Declaration, leave a Note, or sign up for early access to Expeditions, you'll create an account using a magic-link email login.

You agree to:

• Provide a real, current email address
• Keep your account secure (don't share your sign-in link)
• Notify us promptly at info@rawoutdoors.co if you suspect unauthorized access to your account

You're responsible for all activity under your account. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms or that we reasonably believe pose a risk to the Site or other users.

3. User content

The Site lets you submit content, including:

• Declarations — short statements about something you intend to do
• Receipts — updates and optional photos confirming you did the thing
• Notes — short messages of encouragement on others' Declarations
• Display names, cities, and other profile information

We refer to all of this as "User Content."

3.1 Your ownership and license to us

You keep ownership of your User Content. By submitting it, you grant RAW OUTDOORS a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicensable, perpetual license to host, store, reproduce, display, distribute, modify (for formatting and moderation), and use your User Content for the purpose of operating, promoting, and improving the Site and our services. This includes displaying your User Content on the Site to other users and, where appropriate, sharing on social media or in marketing with attribution to your display name.

This license survives the deletion of your account so that we can continue to display Declarations on the public wall for continuity. When you delete your account, your display name and city will be replaced with "Anonymous" on past Declarations, but the Declaration text and any Receipt may remain.

3.2 Your responsibility for what you post

You are solely responsible for your User Content. You represent and warrant that:

• You own it or have the rights to post it
• It doesn't violate any law or anyone else's rights (privacy, publicity, IP, etc.)
• It's truthful as to facts you assert about yourself

3.3 What you can't post

You agree not to submit User Content that:

• Threatens, harasses, defames, or is hateful toward any person or group based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or any other protected characteristic
• Contains explicit sexual content, graphic violence, or content sexualizing minors
• Promotes self-harm, suicide, eating disorders, or substance abuse (Declarations about recovery from these are welcome; content that glorifies them is not)
• Violates anyone's privacy (don't post someone else's identifying information without consent)
• Is spam, advertising, fundraising, or commercial solicitation
• Contains malware, viruses, or attempts to interfere with the Site
• Impersonates another person or entity
• Violates any applicable law

3.4 Moderation

We may, at our sole discretion and without notice, remove, edit, or refuse to publish any User Content for any reason, including violations of these Terms. We are not obligated to monitor User Content but may do so. The presence of User Content on the Site does not mean we endorse it.

If you believe User Content violates these Terms, report it through the report link on the relevant Declaration or Note, or email info@rawoutdoors.co.

4. Acceptable use of the Site

You agree not to:

• Use the Site for any illegal purpose
• Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Site, other users' accounts, or our systems
• Scrape, copy, or harvest data from the Site without our written permission
• Use bots, automated tools, or scripts to interact with the Site, except for standard search engine crawlers
• Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code of the Site
• Interfere with or disrupt the Site, including by submitting excessive requests
• Use the Site to send unsolicited communications to other users
• Misrepresent your identity or affiliation

We reserve the right to investigate and take legal action against violators.

5. Intellectual property

5.1 Our content

All content on the Site that isn't User Content — including the Field Notes essays, films, photography, the Canopy logo, the RAW OUTDOORS brand, the Site design, and underlying software — is owned by RAW OUTDOORS or our licensors and is protected by copyright, trademark, and other laws.

You may view and share Field Notes by linking to them. You may not copy, reproduce, republish, or distribute our content for commercial purposes without our prior written permission.

5.2 Trademarks

"RAW OUTDOORS," "Field Notes" (as used by us), the Canopy badge, and related marks are trademarks of RAW OUTDOORS. You may not use them without permission.

5.3 Copyright complaints (DMCA)

If you believe content on the Site infringes your copyright, send a notice to info@rawoutdoors.co with the subject line "DMCA Notice" containing:

1. A description of the copyrighted work
2. The URL of the allegedly infringing content
3. Your contact information
4. A statement that you have a good faith belief the use is unauthorized
5. A statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information is accurate and you're authorized to act
6. Your physical or electronic signature

6. Expeditions and bookings

The Site includes information about guided expeditions launching in summer 2026. Until expeditions are open for booking, sign-up forms only collect your email for notification purposes.

When expeditions become bookable, separate booking terms, payment terms, liability waivers, and participant agreements will apply. Outdoor activities involve inherent risks. Booking a trip will require you to read and sign waivers acknowledging those risks. Nothing on the Site constitutes an offer or promise of a specific trip until you have a confirmed booking.

7. Third-party links and services

The Site may link to third-party websites, services, or tools (e.g., Instagram, payment processors, email providers). We don't control them and aren't responsible for their content, policies, or practices. Your use of third-party services is governed by those services' terms.

8. Disclaimers

THE SITE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, OR THAT THE SITE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, SECURE, OR ERROR-FREE.

We do not warrant the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of any User Content or other content on the Site. Reliance on it is at your own risk.

Declarations on the Wall are personal statements by users. They are not advice. Acting on what someone else declares — quitting a job, taking a trip, making a life change — is your decision alone, and you accept all risk.

9. Limitation of liability

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, RAW OUTDOORS AND OUR OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, AND AGENTS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF THE SITE.

OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO THESE TERMS OR THE SITE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (a) THE AMOUNT YOU HAVE PAID TO US IN THE PAST 12 MONTHS, OR (b) ONE HUNDRED U.S. DOLLARS ($100).

Some jurisdictions don't allow these limitations, so they may not apply to you in full.

10. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless RAW OUTDOORS and our officers, employees, and agents from any claim, demand, loss, or damages — including reasonable attorneys' fees — arising from:

• Your User Content
• Your use of the Site
• Your violation of these Terms
• Your violation of any law or third-party right

11. Termination

You may close your account at any time through the Account page or by emailing info@rawoutdoors.co.

We may suspend or terminate your account at any time, with or without cause, with or without notice. On termination, your right to use the Site ends. Sections of these Terms that by their nature should survive termination (including IP, disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnification, and dispute resolution) will survive.

12. Changes to the Site or Terms

We may modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Site at any time. We may also update these Terms. If we make material changes, we'll post the updated Terms with a new "Last updated" date and, where appropriate, notify users by email. Your continued use of the Site after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.

13. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles.

13.1 Informal resolution first

Before filing any claim, you agree to first contact us at info@rawoutdoors.co and try to resolve the dispute informally. If we can't resolve it within 60 days, either party may pursue formal proceedings.

13.2 Court proceedings

Any claims not resolved informally will be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Montgomery County, Virginia, and you consent to personal jurisdiction there.

14. Miscellaneous

• Entire agreement. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and us regarding the Site.
• Severability. If any provision is held unenforceable, the rest remains in effect.
• No waiver. Our failure to enforce any right doesn't waive it.
• Assignment. You can't assign your rights under these Terms without our written consent. We can assign ours to a successor.
