Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how RAW OUTDOORS ("RAW OUTDOORS," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use rawoutdoors.co (the "Site").
We try to keep this short and human. If you have questions, email info@rawoutdoors.co.
1. The short version
- We collect the minimum we need to run the Site.
- We don't sell your data. Ever.
- We don't run ads or use ad-tech tracking.
- You can delete your account, and we'll honor it.
- We're not perfect, but we're trying to be honest.
The longer version is below.
2. What we collect
2.1 Information you give us directly
- Account information: your email address (for magic-link sign-in), display name, and city (if you choose to share one)
- User Content: your Declarations, Receipts, Notes, and any photos you choose to upload
- Notification preferences: which emails you've opted in to or out of
- Communications: if you email us, we keep a record of that correspondence
- Expedition early-access list: if you sign up to be notified about expeditions, we collect your email
2.2 Information collected automatically
- Log data: IP address, browser type, operating system, referring URLs, pages visited, and timestamps. This is standard for any website.
- Cookies and similar technologies: We use a small number of cookies to keep you signed in and to count visits. See section 6 for details.
2.3 What we do NOT collect
- We don't collect precise location (GPS) data
- We don't ask for your phone number
- We don't ask for your real name (unless you choose to share it as your display name)
- We don't track you across other websites
- We don't use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or similar ad-tech
3. How we use your information
We use what we collect to:
- Run the Site. Display Declarations, Notes, and Field Notes. Send magic-link sign-in emails. Show your account page.
- Communicate with you. Send transactional emails (account verifications, notes received, declarations sparked, expedition updates if you opted in).
- Moderate content. Review reported User Content. Investigate violations of our Terms.
- Improve the Site. Look at aggregate usage to understand what's working and fix what isn't.
- Comply with the law. Respond to legal requests, enforce our Terms, prevent fraud, and protect users.
We don't use your data to train AI models. We don't profile you for advertising.
4. How we share your information
4.1 We share with these limited categories of recipients:
- Service providers we depend on to run the Site, under confidentiality and data-protection agreements: Hosting (Vercel), Database & authentication (Supabase), Email delivery (Resend), Analytics (Plausible — privacy-respecting, cookieless), Image storage and delivery (Supabase Storage and Cloudinary).
- Legal authorities when required by law (subpoena, court order, government request) or to protect our rights, our users' safety, or the public.
- In a business transaction. If RAW OUTDOORS is acquired or merged, your information may be transferred to the acquiring entity. You'll be notified.
4.2 We never:
- Sell your personal information to anyone
- Share your email with third-party marketers
- Allow advertisers to target you on our Site
4.3 Public information
By design, certain information is public on the Site:
- Declarations, Receipts, and Notes you submit
- Your display name (or 'Anonymous' if you chose anonymity) and city, attached to your User Content
- Your User Content remains visible even if you delete your account, with display name and city replaced by 'Anonymous' (see section 7)
Don't post anything in a Declaration, Receipt, or Note you wouldn't want a stranger to read.
5. How long we keep your information
- Account information: for as long as your account is active. After you delete your account, we keep your email in a deleted-accounts log for up to 30 days for fraud prevention, then remove it.
- User Content: Declarations, Receipts, and Notes remain on the Site indefinitely (with display name anonymized after account deletion) to preserve the integrity of the public wall.
- Log data: typically 90 days, then deleted or anonymized.
- Email correspondence: typically 2 years after our last exchange.
- Backups: retained for up to 30 days, then overwritten.
If you want all User Content fully removed (not just anonymized) when you delete your account, email us — we'll handle case-by-case.
6. Cookies and tracking
We use a small number of cookies and similar technologies:
- Essential cookies — to keep you signed in and remember your preferences. These can't be turned off without breaking the Site.
- Privacy-respecting analytics — we use Plausible, which doesn't use cookies and doesn't track individuals across sites. It tells us things like '100 people visited the Declaration Wall today' without telling us who they were.
We do not use third-party advertising cookies, social-media tracking pixels, or session-replay tools.
You can clear cookies in your browser at any time. If you do, you'll need to sign in again.
7. Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate information
- Delete your account and personal information
- Object to or restrict how we use your information
- Port your information (export it in a machine-readable format)
- Withdraw consent for things you previously consented to (like email notifications)
You can exercise most of these rights directly through your /account page. For anything else, email info@rawoutdoors.co with the subject line "Privacy Request." We'll respond within 30 days.
7.1 If you're in the EU/UK (GDPR)
Our legal bases for processing your information are:
- Contract — to provide the Site you signed up for
- Legitimate interests — running and improving the Site, preventing fraud, moderating content
- Consent — for optional email notifications and any future marketing
- Legal obligation — when required by law
You have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
7.2 If you're in California (CCPA / CPRA)
You have specific rights including the right to know what we collect, the right to delete, and the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We don't sell or share personal information for advertising purposes, so the opt-out is effectively automatic.
7.3 Account deletion specifics
When you delete your account:
- Your email is removed from our active database within 30 days
- Your display name on past Declarations, Receipts, and Notes is replaced with 'Anonymous'
- Your city is removed
- The text content of your Declarations, Receipts, and Notes remains visible on the Site
- Notification preferences and account history are deleted
- Backups containing your data are overwritten within 30 days
If you want full removal of all content (not just anonymization), say so in your deletion request and we'll honor it where reasonably possible.
8. Security
We use industry-standard technical and organizational measures to protect your information:
- HTTPS everywhere
- Encrypted database connections
- Hashed and salted authentication tokens
- Access controls limiting who on our team can see what
- Regular dependency updates and security reviews
No system is perfectly secure. If we ever experience a data breach affecting your information, we'll notify you and applicable regulators as required by law.
9. Children's privacy
The Site is not intended for children under 16. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you're a parent and believe your child has provided us with personal information, contact us at info@rawoutdoors.co and we'll delete it.
10. International users
The Site is operated from the United States. If you're outside the U.S., your information will be transferred to and processed in the U.S., where data protection laws may differ from those in your country. By using the Site, you consent to this transfer.
For users in the EU/UK, we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses or other lawful transfer mechanisms where required.
11. Sensitive content
Declarations sometimes touch on sensitive topics — quitting jobs, leaving relationships, recovery from addiction, mental health journeys, and more.
- We treat all User Content with discretion.
- We do not disclose User Content to third parties beyond what's described in section 4.
- If a Declaration suggests intent to self-harm, we may temporarily hold it from public view and reach out to the author with crisis resources before publishing. We're not a substitute for professional help.
If you're in crisis, please contact a local emergency line. In the U.S., you can call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline).
12. Third-party links
The Site links to third-party sites (Instagram, payment processors, etc.). Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies, not this one. We're not responsible for what happens when you leave our Site.
13. Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we'll post the new version with a new "Last updated" date. For material changes, we'll notify you by email or by a prominent notice on the Site before they take effect. Your continued use of the Site after changes constitutes acceptance.
